I like driving in fog, walking in fog, and just generally being in fog.

It’s foggy here this morning and I love it is what I’m getting at :)

PSA: Highways are always clearer, but they only stay that way if you PICK UP THE PACE, people. It’s the moving air that clears them. Go as fast as you dare and you will be helping those coming behind to see where they are going. (Note I’m not saying 100mph into can’t-see-the-guy-just-in-front fog. I’m saying that if you don't push to the limit it's a losing battle for those in behind. That limit could be 30mph.)

I have fog lights that turn to see around corners and are JDM yellow. It’s illegal to use them when it’s not foggy.

I love fog

I once drove onto a motorway straight into a heavy bank of fog with near-zero visibility, with no one in front to clear it, but a ferry-load of impatient cars and lorries behind me. That was slightly uncomfortable.

Apart from that, I’m with you!

I’m not sure how much fog lights actually do... but then we don’t get much in the way of really dense fog here. What’s the purpose behind the yellow?

You can get the tunnel vision rush at half the speed. Or a much nicer one at full speed, if it’s not too dense and the road is clear ;)

That might not be the best way to put it. I don't mean tunnel vision as in only looking dead ahead (that's the stupidest thing you could do in fog), I mean as in stuff rushing past quickly.

It’s hard to get the ball rolling, but if everyone pushed as hard as they dared, people coming along later would thank them.

Agreed on near-zero vis. Not a picnic in a car. Still love being in it outside of a car though.

Official hater of fog here. I learned to hate it when I took my first drive in really thick fog. I had to turn right on a rural highway. I had the windows down so I could hear because I certainly couldn’t see. I thought it was clear, so I pulled out.

The next thing I saw was a giant chrome grill bracketed by headlights.

The next thing I heard was the triple tone of air horns and screeching tires.

I did the only reasonable thing one can do in that situation. I stomped the gas.

All 76 horsepower came online and my little truck was SCREAMING in a desperate attempt to get some distance between me and the 18-wheeler of doom. The little truck didn’t fail me and we both came through without a scratch.

But now that I’ve relived the moment, I’m pretty sure the screaming was me.

I’m with you when it gets down to near-zero vis. Not a picnic.

I can imagine that rural highways would be some of the most dangerous, having high speed traffic but not nearly enough traffic to clear the channel you notice on major (Interstate-style) highways.

For the rest, though, I love it.

I think yellow cuts through fog better because of the different wavelength. I think they’re not used some places though because they look too much like streetlights at a distance, so some people don’t realize it’s a moving vehicle or something.

I guess that makes sense. I have noticed a lot of high-power auxilliary lights are yellowy—they must work or they wouldn't do it.

Yep. It was quite funny to watch the most impatient ones casually overtake me at high speed, only to suddenly find out what it was like to be in front with no one to clear the fog or light up the road (it was dark), and then slow down to the same speed I had been driving. That repeated itself about 10 times, with no one daring to really go much faster.

As long as it’s fog, and not a mist, I agree completely.

Since you’re a fine fog connoisseur like myself I’ll share some fog pron from yesterday. The last couple days in the French Quarter has been like living in cloud city.

Having driven through rural West Virginia at night during a dense fog with no other cars around, I did not find it fun in the least.

My roadtrip partner’s constant ‘Damn it looks like Silent Hill out there’ comments did nothing to help.

I draw the line for "enjoyable" when it approaches near-zero vis, but otherwise I really enjoy it.

The yellow lets everybody know that you’ve got a mad dope JDM car from Japan that was imported from Japan and is Japanese. And stuff.

Yeah I dunno, GhostZ is probably right. I don’t get much dense fog either, but I can’t wait until I do!

The fogs themselves are supposed to avoid reflecting back in your eyes like headlights do, by being lower down and aimed lower. In theory it’s still reflecting back, but not directly at your eyes.
